TOKYO—If Jack Cheng has his way, any company will be able to make its own car or truck, even if it doesn’t have suppliers, blueprints or factories. They could do it, he says, by outsourcing—the same business model that has been widely adopted in consumer electronics. Companies including Sony and Apple realized decades ago that it was easier to hand production of PlayStations and iPhones over to contract-manufacturing giants such as Taiwan’s Foxconn Technology Group .

TOKYO— Toyota sells more cars each year than any other company, and it had similarly big dreams when it created its own in-house technology startup in 2021. It picked an American tech whiz to run it and envisioned building software for its cars that would become a standard for the whole industry. So great were the startup’s ambitions that one of its projects was building an entire new city in the foothills of Mount Fuji where it could test self-driving cars, robots and hydrogen for power production. Then-Chief Executive Akio Toyoda said the new unit would help Toyota navigate a “once-in-a-century period of profound change” in which cars become electric, internet-connected, autonomous and heavily reliant on software.

Converting gas cars into electric vehicles is becoming more common, with several companies offering ways to ‘upcycle’ classic cars and fleet vehicles. WSJ’s George Downs explores why retrofitting isn’t more widespread. Illustration: George DownsTOKYO— Toyota Motor’s new management, looking to make up lost ground in electric vehicles, said it would add billions of dollars in spending to reach EV targets. Toyota said Wednesday it would invest an additional ¥1 trillion, equivalent to $7.4 billion, in EVs through 2030, bringing Toyota’s total planned outlays for the period to around $37 billion.

Photo: Matt McClain/The Washington Post via Getty ImagesToyota Motor Corp. is getting ready to bring its latest plug-in hybrid model to American showrooms next month, a part of the company’s bet that plug-ins can be the bridge between traditional cars and electric vehicles. Toyota, Ford Motor Co. and Hyundai Motor Co. are among global brands rolling out new plug-in hybrid gas-electric cars. While most hybrids on the road today combine gas engines with electric motors to save fuel, plug-in hybrids can drive primarily on batteries—with the engine as a backup—making them the closest thing to a full EV on the road.

Stellantis NV and Bayerische Motoren Werke AG are talking to Panasonic Holdings Corp. about teaming up to build electric-vehicle battery plants in North America, people familiar with the talks said. Panasonic specializes in cylindrical batteries, which resemble an oversize version of the AA batteries commonly used in consumer devices. Over the past decade, Japan-based Panasonic has churned out billions of cylindrical cells for its main car-making customer, Tesla Inc.
Tesla Rival BYD Plans Big Commercial-Vehicle Push
  + stars: | 2023-03-08 | by ( River Davis | Raffaele Huang | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
China’s BYD, which has a factory in Lancaster, Calif., is North America’s largest electric-bus manufacturer. China’s BYD Co., having risen over the past decade to become one of the top global sellers of electric passenger cars, is now plotting a big push into battery-electric commercial vehicles. Over the next three years, BYD plans to introduce new commercial-vehicle models in markets including China, Europe and Japan, according to people familiar with the company’s plans. It has mapped out a budget of more than $20 billion for its commercial-vehicle unit through 2025, with major outlays planned for research, product development and expansion of production capacity, the people said.
SPARKS, Nev.—A pioneer in making electric-vehicle batteries in the U.S. has a message for newcomers: It takes time to power up. Japan’s Panasonic Holdings Corp. started building what would become America’s first large-scale EV-battery plant in 2015, at a site owned by Tesla Inc. in the rolling hills outside of Reno, Nev.
TOKYO—When Shoichiro Toyoda took the helm of his father’s company in 1982, about 6% of new cars sold in the U.S. were made by Toyota Motor Corp., compared with 43% from General Motors. Mr. Toyoda, who died Feb. 14 at the age of 97, built plants in North America, smoothed over trade frictions and accelerated Toyota’s growth into a global juggernaut. He ultimately left his son, Akio Toyoda , a company that in 2021 overtook GM as the U.S.’s top-selling auto maker for the first time.
TOKYO— Toyota Motor Corp.’s new chief executive said he was looking to accelerate the auto maker’s push into electric vehicles by introducing new EV-optimized parts and manufacturing methods. Toyota will develop new EVs for its luxury Lexus brand by 2026, and everything in those models will be optimized for EVs including the battery and the manufacturing platform, Koji Sato said at a briefing Monday. Mr. Sato, 53, is set to become chief executive in April, taking over from longtime leader Akio Toyoda .
